Skin tumor is an abnormal growth of a tissue which can range from a small lesion to a large mass. These can be benign (non cancerous and non harmful) or malignant (cancerous and harmful). Benign tumors, unlike cancerous tumors, don’t spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. Though skin tumors can appear at any age, it is more common in elderly people. Most of the benign tumors are asymptomatic and cause no harm even if left untouched.

Most of the lesions being asymptomatic present as mere growth on the surface of skin or beneath the skin as a lump. The color of the lesions can vary from black to skin colored to red color. Few lesions mimic malignant (cancer like) tumors. Very few benign lesions present unusually and can turn into malignant.
Management
Most of the benign lesions are diagnosed clinically, though few may need to be investigated by histopathology. Since few lesions mimic malignant conditions, it is often safe to get the condition evaluated by a dermatologist. Since the lesions are asymptomatic, the lesions can be either left untouched or can be removed depending on the type of tumor and symptoms or due to cosmetic concerns.
Various modalities to remove the lesions are
- Electrocautery
- Radiofrequency
- Chemical peels
- Surgical excision
- Cryotherapy
