Causes for Psoriasis
The exact cause of psoriasis is still unknown. Genetic and environmental factors together play a role in causing Psoriasis.It can be triggered in a person who is genetically susceptible (positive family history) and he gets exposed to by numerous environmental factors like physical injury to skin, systemic infections caused by bacteria, emotional stress, drugs (lithium , antimalarials etc), alcohol, smoking etc. Psoriasis is not contagious. So it won’t spread from person to person by contact.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
- Red, raised patches on skin covered with thick, whitish-silver scales.
- Dry, itchy, cracked skin that may bleed on scratching.
- Thickened, pitted or ridged nails. In severe cases, the nails may also begin to crumble or detach from the nail bed.
- Scaly plaques on the scalp.
- Psoriatic arthritis - Swollen, stiff and painful joints.
Management of Psoriasis
The diagnosis of psoriasis is made clinically. Biopsy and histopathological examination may be required in doubtful cases.
Ample therapeutic options are available to bring remission in psoriasis and when properly selected, in most cases the lesions clear up in couple of months. Numerous topical medications containing steroids, immunomodulators, emollients, vitamin D analogues are given . Phototherapy, photochemotherapy are benefitial too.
